CALL FOR COMMENTS
 

MKUSHI COPPER JOINT VENTURE LIMITED FOR THE PROPOSED MKUSHI COPPER PROJECT IN MKUSHI DISTRICT.

Mkushi Copper Joint Venture Limited (MCJVL) is proposing to set up an open Copper mine, build a processing plants, workshops, offices, stores, accommodation and other ancillary facilities at the Old Mkushi Mine in Mkushi. It is also proposing to rehabilitate and expand such existing mine waste facilities as tailings dams and overburden dumps. The mine will be located at the brown field site of the former old Mkushi mine in Chief Chikupili's area within Mkushi District. It is estimated that the mine will produce 1.6 million tons of copper ore per annum at 1.08% Copper content, with a mine life span of just over six (6) years. Further studies are expected to increase the mine life beyond the initial six years.

This notice therefore, serves to inform members of the general public, interested and affected parties that an Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the Proposed Mkushi Copper Project in Mkushi District has been received by the ECZ for review, in line with the provisions of the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act Number 12 of 1990 as read with the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations; SI. No. 28, of 1997 and is available for scrutiny at the following places:

  1. Mkushi District Council
  2. Old Mkushi Mine Site in Mkushi.
  3. Environmental Council of Zambia Offices – Northern Regional Office in Ndola ;
  4. Environmental Council of Zambia Offices - Information Documentation Centre (IDC) in Lusaka  ;

The report will be available for inspection during office hours from 09:00 hours to 16:00 hours. Interested and affected parties may send their written submissions to the undersigned. The deadline for submission of comments is 20 th July, 2008. The Report can also be accessed on the ECZ website: www.necz.org.zm
