THE PROPOSED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THE OPERATION OF LARFAGE CEMENT - NDOLA PLANT. Lafarge Cement Zambia Limited is a cement manufacturing company with branches in Ndola and Lusaka. The company submitted an Environmental Management Plant (EMP) for their plant in Ndola to the Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) for consideration. The operations of the Ndola plant comprise of open pit mining of limestone, shale, sand and processing the raw materials into cement. Limestone and shale are mined from Lafarge Cement Zambia Limited owned pits that are close to the plant whereas sand is mined and supplied by sub-contractors. Limestone is mined by open pit mining methods such as drilling and blasting. After mining, the materials are transported to the plant using dump trucks for crushing and milling. The limestone, shale and sand are then mixed and ground in ball mills to produce a homogenised feed which is charged in coal-fired kilns for heating up to 1500oC before being drastically cooled to produce clinker. The clinker is then ground together with gypsum and other additives to produce cement which is bagged for dispatch or sold in bulk. Key environmental impacts associated with these operations include air pollution, land degradation and water pollution. In accordance with provisions of the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act Number 12 of 1990, read together with the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations (SI No. 28 of 1997), ECZ will hold a public hearing to receive comments from stakeholders. The public hearing will be held on Thursday, 3rd June 2010 starting at 14:00 hrs. The venue for the public hearing will be Lowenthal Theatre near the Civic Centre in Ndola. ECZ is therefore inviting all interested and affected parties to present their comments at this important meeting. Copies of the EMP that will be discussed are available at the following places: Click here to download an electronic copy of the EMP For further details, kindly contact the undersigned The Manager – Inspectorate The Manager – Northern Region |
