THE PROPOSED LIME PLANT IN SENIOR CHIEF CHIWALA'S AREA IN MASAITI DISTRICT BY HANDYMAN'S PARADISE Handyman’s Paradise Limited submitted an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to the Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) for construction of a lime plant with a production capacity of 100 tonnes per day of lime. The proposed project will comprise open pit mining of the limestone, hauling the mined limestone using dump trucks, crushing and calcination. Calcination shall be done using a vertical kiln. The kiln shall have three sections namely the pre-heating section, calcination section and cooling section. At the calcination stage, limestone (CaCO3) shall be converted into lime (CaO) with carbon dioxide (CO2) as a by-product. After cooling, the lime shall be stockpiled in readiness for dispatch. The proposed project shall be located in Chief Chiwala’s area in Masaiti District near Zambezi Portland Cement. Although the site location is in Masaiti District, it is about 12 Kilometres from the Ndola – Kapirimposhi road and about 20 kilometres southeast of the Ndola Central Business District. The main negative impacts anticipated from the proposed project shall be land degradation as a resulting of mining activities and air pollution from processing activities. In accordance with provisions of the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act Number 12 of 1990, read together with the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations (SI No. 28 of 1997), ECZ is now calling for comments regarding the proposed project. This notice also serves to inform the general public that a public meeting for the proposed project shall be held on Friday, 4th June 2010 at 14:00 hrs at Chiwala High School.
